Three Things Thursday

1. Happy Cinco de Mayo, everybody!  Future hubs cooked us a delicious dinner of chicken fajitas, which paired quite well with strawberry-rhubarb wine from Winehaven Winery and Vineyard in Chisago City, MN.  Yum!

2. I tested out a pair of Vibram FiveFingers.  I bought a pair of Vibram FiveFingers KSO at REI several weeks ago (because I had a coupon!) and took them out for the first time on Tuesday evening.  It was such a gorgeous evening, I couldn't resist!  My pace was considerably slower (for me) while running in them (anywhere from a 10:00-10:30 minute per mile pace), but I liked how light they were on my feet and how lightly and quickly my feet hit the ground while wearing them.  Running in them felt effortless.

My calves are now screaming bloody murder at me, due to DOMS and the fact that I was using my calf muscles a lot more than I usually do.  I was tempted to wear them for the Medtronic TC 1 Mile next Thursday instead of vying for that PR, but I think I'll attempt the PR instead.  My legs need to get used to the VFFs more before I use them for a race.

Future hubs also recently bought a pair of VFFs.  You can read about his experience HERE.

3. Speaking of the TC 1 Mile, I got an e-mail blast from Twin Cities in Motion today announcing that Ryan Hall and his wife, Sara, would be running the race.

You can read the press release HERE.

I'm so stoked!  Ryan Hall is one of my favorite American distance runners and I'm excited to see him vying for the win and a sub-4 mile.  Even if I don't PR, seeing Ryan run will make the whole race worth it for me. :)

Do you have a favorite distance runner?
I like Hall (as mentioned before) and Kara Goucher.  Kara is originally from Minnesota. :)

  1. I really like Ryan and I've got his book high on my "to read" list just because of his attitude before, during, and after a race. He's a little kid the entire time, just enjoying where he's at!

And which Vibrams did you get?

  2. Minimalist - cool! Can't wait to hear (err, read) more about you "growing" into them more. I'm excited for you and your new running path.

I like Ryan, Kara, and I think Meb has an interesting background. He's overcome so much in his life that we can't even fathom.

  3. Nate Jenkins - hands down.
As far as female distance runners, there's a couple I'm learning more about Lauren Fleshman and Esther Erb - very intriguing stories.

  4. You're so awesome! Thanks for your willingness to share your brain stress "ball". I'm totally going to take you up on that if in a month the PT thinks I need MORE scraping. Though . . . I'd hate to "split the brain" in half - how BAD would that be??? You're awesome!!!! Ohhh while I'm typing a comment completely unrelated to your post - I have a new friend from MO that I've met through my blog - she and I have been thinking a LOT about your suggestion we do a Team Ortho race. I've looked around the website. Totally take some suggestions for which race would be a good choice for us to do in 2012? My email is spunky(underscore)lisa(at)yahoo(dot)com
We welcome any suggestions you have. Thanks Richelle!

  5. Hijacking the comment wall to make race suggestions. Three races come to mind. Get Lucky 7k. A great Irish themed race with a beautiful course and great entertainment. The Minneapolis Half Marathon. Beautiful course just mind the final hill. Or for the adventurous type, the Go Commando! adventure 5k. 10 or 11 obstacles (avoidable if you really don't want to do them) littered across a 5k jaunt that will leave you tested but satisfied. /end hijack

I am also excited about Ryan Hall a great athlete that isn't afraid of sharing his faith.

Goucher still takes first for the females but I think Davila is poised to make some waves.

  7. Will he get your autograph?
At the moment I don't have a favorite distance runner.

  9. Good luck on your race! At the nashville marathon I saw both Ryan Hall and Kara Goucher speak! Even got my runners world signed by Kara and took a picture with her :) Isn't she amazing?!

  10. I was super excited to read about Ryan Hall too! I can't wait to hear if you see him, and how it goes!
Those VFF? Sound cool, but I can't stand having my toes separated! Keep us updated!

  11. I am impressed that you tried out the shoes. I have been considering it, but I too need a coupon - right now I am not willing to fork over full price for an experiment.

  13. YAY For joining the VFF club! LOL! Crazy about that calve pain huh? So weird... but running in them are fun. I'm excited to hear how you like you them as you get to run in them more.

  14. It would be so cool to see an elite runner just let loose and run! I've only seen the good runners when they've been flying by on an out and back part of a race.

My favorite is Steve Prefontaine. Sadly I can never see him run. :( He was awesome .... and his sister hugged me ... and e-mailed me! WHAT?? Yeah, I'm practically part of the family now. Pretty sure I'll be spending Christmas with Pre's family this year. We're pretty tight like that. ;)
